10 Ways to be More Eco Conscious

  1. Shop local on your high street, greengrocer or market instead of the supermarket. Buying fresh meat, vegetables and fish use less plastic packaging. And use a fabric shopping bag instead of a plastic one.
  2. If you do shop at a supermarket, be more eco aware of it’s packaging – card wrapped or tins which can be recycled reduce landfill. Buying washing powder in a box rather than a plastic bottle or a bar of soap instead of liquid soap are little ways you can help reduce your household waste.
  3. Buy more eco friendly clothes instead of synthetic fibres, which contain plastic particles. Fabrics such as cotton, linen , silk and hemp are far more sustainable and kinder to the environment.
  4. Alternatively , if you prefer clothes that have a longer life or love fashion, buy second hand from charity shops, car boot fairs or jumble sales. Not only can you save money, but you can reduce the clothes that go to landfill. (If you are good at sewing, repairing a worn shirt or jacket with a patch or unique pattern, like I have done in my photo, can ensure you are able to wear your clothes longer).
  5. Buying sustainable furniture and household goods is also a greener way of life. Swapping plastic storage for wooden shelving or wicker baskets, glass jars instead of plastic tubs or a bamboo toothbrush instead of a plastic one are far better for the planet.
  6. Walk more or take public transport (bus, train, tube etc) instead of using a car or taxi as it reduces air pollution. Or if you fancy a different mode of transport, cycle to work instead. If you do prefer the car, think about ” car sharing” instead of travelling alone which reduces carbon emissions and cars on the road.
  7. Unplugging electrics when not in use reduces your energy bills, using low energy bulbs in the home or having solar panels fitted to the roof all help in doing your bit to help climate change.
  8. Use the washing machine less often and always wash on a 30 degree cycle when ever possible. Alternatively, washing by hand occasionally can also benefit wearing your clothes for longer. Also reduce using a tumble drier, by hanging clothes outside to dry or on an indoor line.
  9. Another great tip to help the environment is have a shower more often than a bath (as it uses less water) and when brushing your teeth, turn off the tap until you need to rinse.
  10. If you have a garden, invest in a water butt to collect fresh rain water, which you can then water the garden with. And buy a compost bin to get rid of your garden waste and grass cuttings. Then over time, you can add it back to the garden again.

As you can see, there are many ways you can help the environment and live a greener life. These are just a few ideas to think about doing your bit to help protect the world we live in.
